Ever been curious about how mushrooms grow? Maybe you'd like to try your hand at growing some yourself? Join Plant Chicago's Social Mycology group members Avi Kazen and Thomas Knapp for this 3-part class and hands-on workshop. In this series, you will have the option to follow along and grow your own mushrooms with the supplied kits or your own supplies. Or you can simply watch, take notes, and ask questions!
Part One (2/20 11AM-12:30PM) will cover mushroom anatomy and biology, and attendees will create 'spawn jars' with grain and liquid culture.
Part Two (3/13 11AM-12:30PM) will cover the preparation of a bulk substrate and transfer of spawn to create 'fruiting bags.'
Part Three (4/3 11AM-11:30PM) (optional) will be a discussion of fruiting chambers, a check-in on how everyone's mushrooms fruited, and a final Q+A.
Pre-made kits with all necessary materials for both Parts One and Two will be available for pickup at Plant Chicago one week prior to the start of the series. Avi Kazen hails from Tucson, Arizona. He has a background in bioengineering and a passion for sustainable technology. His interest in mushrooms arose after an internship with Ecovative Design, and he has been experimenting with mycology ever since.
Thomas Knapp is from Houston, TX. He graduated with a B.S in Environmental Science from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2019. Soon after he relocated to Chicago to attend Loyola University Chicago. He has a raging passion for learning and sharing about all things mushroom-related!
