Joanna , Food Access Intern
My name is Joanna. I am a rising sophomore at Pomona College undecided on my major but exploring my interests in Public Policy Analysis, Economics, Asian Studies, Media Studies, and Data Science. On campus, I coordinate Rooftop Garden, an environmental education program for local high school students, and volunteer at the Food Recovery Network. I am thrilled to return to Chicago this summer and work as a Food Access Intern at Plant Chicago! I hope to promote the Local Food Boxes and raise awareness about valuable yet underutilized programs such as Link Card and Link Match.
What was Joanna up to this summer?
"During my internship at Plant Chicago, I had the opportunity to engage in various tasks, from entering member data into Salesforce, tending to the plants, and assisting with set-up, take-down, and translation at the Mercados de Intercambio. I learned about survey design and improved my written communication skills by creating surveys that glean insight into the Mercado de Intercambio, workshops, and small businesses.
My favorite part of this internship at Plant Chicago was the people. Meeting new people at the Mercado de Intercambio and the other farmers markets we visited was energizing! The staff members are so welcoming and supportive. Everyone I spoke with was eager to share their knowledge and experiences, enabling me to learn so much more beyond my program area. As I enter my sophomore year of college, I better understand my academic interests and the career paths I would like to explore, thanks to this internship."
Isaac , Programs Associate
I'm Isaac, a rising freshman at Boston University excited to join Plant Chicago this summer as a Farmers Market & Food Box Support Intern. I am majoring in accounting and planning to minor in computer science. Outside of my studies, I enjoy staying active and catching up on some of my shows. During my time here, I hope to become more proficient in data collection and analysis while contributing to the success of the farmer markets.
What was Isaac up to this summer?
"My time at Plant Chicago has been both enjoyable and educational. I've learned a lot about coordinating a farmer's market, caring for a garden, and managing store transactions. The Mercado de Intercambio brought people together and deepened my connections with the community. I enjoyed meeting new people everyday and working with other farmers.
Supporting Plant Chicago has shifted my perspective on waste, allowing me to view it as a resource rather than a problem. Their approach to composting and landscaping has transformed my understanding of waste's potential. Plant Chicago also offers workshops to people of all ages on topics anywhere from caring for your garden, to making your own teas. Plant Chicago demonstrates that working with smaller farmers to build local circular economies strengthens community ties. My time here has truly been a unique experience, filled with incredible people and a fantastic community; I'll miss being part of it."
