Fish Feed Experiment – Spent Grain

Our aquaponic farm has many mouths to feed, and fish food can be a substantial cost to a farm of any size. Exploring ways to possibly lower this cost, we looked inward at the building, and to the waste products produced inside. The beer brewery on site produces a large amount of spent grain as part of their normal production, and this grain has been touted as being edible to fish. The idea of possibly reusing material AND saving money is always a tantalizing subject for us.

During the winter and spring of 2016 one of our interns set out to explore just how well spent grain can be used as a food source, comparing growth rates against our current commercial fish feed. Click below to see what we found!
