During the summer of 2015, Plant Chicago took on the task of testing out a new method of composting food waste. The BiobiN is a dumpster, available in various sizes, modified with a forced, filtered air system. This allows the BiobiN to accept large amounts of biomass while limiting odors, while also starting the composting process. When the BiobiN is full, it can be tipped onsite, or taken to a facility for further processing.
Our experiment intended to test the capabilities and limits of the BiobiN, primarily with regards to types of materials and how well they are processed. We were also interested in establishing best practices for using the BiobiN. The results are presented in the document below.
